Sudden death for Seve

Winner: Seve Ballesteros
67 69 65 70 = 271
*beat Colin Montgomerie at first hole of play-off
First prize: £83,330

One shot made up for a year of frustration for Seve Ballesteros when he captured his second Volvo PGA title on the first extra hole of a sudden-death play-off against the emerging Colin Montgomerie.

The shot in question was a five iron from 220 yards which flew like an arrow and settled three feet from the pin.

When the putt went in for the winning birdie, European golf (with the possible exception of Montgomerie) celebrated in the knowledge that Ballesteros was back where he belonged - at the top of his form.

A field of the highest quality had assembled at Wentworth Club, and the contest which unfolded bore that out.

Ballesteros, assisted by a dazzling third round 65, shot a closing 70 to be caught by Montgomerie, who had four rounds in the sixties.

Third, a stroke behind, was Eamonn Darcy, while Bernhard Langer, Jesper Parnevik and Nick Faldo finished in the top six in a memorable event.
