Volvo Masters Andalucia Cut to 54 Holes at Montecastillo

The third round of the Volvo Masters Andalucia resumed at 10.00 on Sunday after a further day of high winds restricted play in the third round to a handful of shots at Montecastillo Hotel and Golf Resort. The first groups in the third round on Saturday had just teed off when play was halted at 11.35. The tournament will now be played over 54 holes.

The second round had been completed on Saturday morning, with Ireland's Paul McGinley leading the tournament on 135, nine under par, after recording a round of 69. Sweden's Mathias Gronberg lies in second place on 137 with Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington joint third on 138.

However the high winds which had caused a suspension on Friday evening gathered in force and the third round was brought to a halt just minutes after the first groups on the first and tenth tees had begun their rounds.

David Garland, Director of Tour Operations with The European Tour, explained: "A decision today was fairly much one a knife edge all afternoon.

"The conditions here at the clubhouse seemed very playable, but around the corner of the course, at the 11th, the 15th and the fifth greens, which are exposed to the north wind, it was unplayable all afternoon.

"We’ve had Neal Briggs and Paul Carrigill, two ex-Tour players out there, determining whether it’s playable or not. John Paramor and I also had a trip out mid to late afternoon to assess everything ourselves and unfortunately we’ve had to cancel play for the day.

"Play will resume in the same draw order tomorrow morning at 8.30. The first game on either side did tee off but did not complete the hole. As of yet, I cannot say whether tomorrow’s round will be the third round or the final round."
