Walker and Schwartzel to headline Porsche European Open

Major Champions Jimmy Walker and Charl Schwartzel have confirmed their attendance in the Porsche European Open at Green Eagle Golf Course in Hamburg from July 27-30.

Walker and Schwartzel join a strong field of players for the event, including Thongchai Jaidee, the 2015 Porsche European Open Champion, and 2016 Europe Ryder Cup player, Chris Wood.

The American Ryder Cup star will make his debut in Northern Germany as he aims to add to a trophy cabinet that includes the 2016 US PGA Championship, amongst six PGA TOUR titles.

The 38 year old completed the set of first-time Major Championship winners in 2016 as he went wire-to-wire to claim victory at the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club after storms saw much of day three washed out, yet he recorded rounds of 68 and 67 to finish at 14 under and hold off the challenge of defending champion Jason Day.

Walker said: “I am already looking forward to this prestigious tournament on the European Tour with a world renowned title sponsor in Porsche and on a course that I have heard is meant to be extremely difficult. This is an exciting event and I am looking forward to coming to Hamburg.”

Meanwhile South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel - the 2011 Masters Tournament Champion - will return to the tournament for the seventh time as he looks to add to his 11 European Tour titles.

The 32 year old, who recently finished third at the 2016 Masters Tournament at Augusta National, has found most success on home soil, including his continued domination of the Alfred Dunhill Championship that he won in 2016 for a fourth time since the 2005 season.

“Porsche always does a great job with this event and I am looking forward to teeing it up in Hamburg. I see the course is over 7,000 metres so it will be a true test and one of the longest we will play on tour all year,” he said.

Tournament Director and CEO of 4sports & Entertainment AG, Dominik Senn, commented: "We are excited to be welcoming these two world golf stars to tee it up at the Porsche European Open in Hamburg. It is clear the players are looking forward to testing their game on a challenging course in a great part of the world. As a result, golf fans in Germany and across Europe have a fantastic opportunity to watch live world-class golf this July!”
