Lee Westwood missed out narrowly on the chance to reach a career-high Number Two on the Official World Golf Ranking when he finished runner-up to Phil Mickelson in the Masters Tournament at Augusta National.
The English Ryder Cup player collected 60 points to remain in fourth position, while Mickelson’s three stroke victory hoisted the American into second spot behind World Number One Tiger Woods with Steve Stricker dropping a place to third.
The Champion at Augusta in 2004 and 2006 and with a US PGA title in between, Mickelson's bogey free final round gave him his fourth Major Championship win. In moving back to World Number Two, the gap between Mickelson and Woods - who finished fourth - is 2.58 average OWGR points.
English golfers occupy three of the leading seven positions on the OWGR, with Westwood staying one place above Ian Poulter, who finished tied tenth at Augusta to move up from seventh to fifth, while Paul Casey slips a place to seventh.
England’s James Morrison secured his maiden European Tour title at the Madeira Islands Open BPI - Portugal after holding off a determined charge from countryman Oliver Fisher to climb inside the world’s top 200.
Overnight leader Morrison carded a final round 70 to finish on 20 under par, one clear of Fisher, who roared into contention with a host of birdies on the final day. With this win Morrison, a former England youth cricketer, jumps 174 positions to World Number 182.
