Alejandro Canizares last week secured his second European Tour victory – and first for eight years – at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco, and europeantour.com took a look at the tools the Spaniard used to complete the job…
The 31 year old led from the outset after a blistering 62 in round one and a closing round of 70 was enough to secure a wire-to-wire, five-shot triumph at Golf du Palais Royal.
After a rich vein of form in which he has made every cut since last September, a run of six months and 16 tournaments which also includes three other top-ten finishes, Canizares finally reaped the fruits of his labour in Morocco in capturing a long-awaited second title.
Canizares’ overall game looked in immaculate shape over four days in Agadir, where he was accurate from the tee, precise with his play into the greens and sure-footed on the putting surface en route to a 19 under par winning total.
A look at the European Tour Statistics confirms the above, with the Spaniard ranking 16th in the Driving Accuracy numbers after hitting almost 81 per cent of fairways last week, but it was the shorter areas of his play in which Canizares really excelled.
The Madrid native found almost 78 per cent of Greens in Regulation – topping the field in this category – and was no less impressive in wielding his flat stick.
Canizares ranked fourth in Putts per GIR at 1.582 and 12th in Putts per Round at 27.8, proving well-worth the €250,000 winner’s cheque come close of play last Sunday.
