In 1988 Volvo took over the sponsorship of the PGA Championship and the title was won by a 30-year-old Welshman by the name of Ian Woosnam.
Nine years later, with the Championship firmly established as the flagship event on the European Tour, Woosnam was celebrating again having triumphed ahead of the trio of Darren Clarke, Ernie Els and Nick Faldo.
During an enthralling week of golf the Irish pair of Clarke and Eamonn Darcy set the early pace with opening rounds of 66, but Woosnam took control during the second round with a 68 to lead by two strokes at the halfway stage.
By the end of the third day’s play Woosnam still held a slender one-stroke advantage. His final round of 70 was enough to hold of the challenges from a world-class field.
“This is one of the great Championships of the world,” said Woosnam. “To win from such a strong field is always satisfying, and to win on a tough course like this makes it even better.”
