Peterson continues fine form in Switzerland

Paul Peterson's sparkling recent form continued as he took a share of the clubhouse lead on day one of the Omega European Masters.

Just 11 days after claiming his first European Tour win at the D+D REAL Czech Masters, the American was once again impressing, carding a six under par 64 to share the early lead with France's Mike Lorenzo-Vera at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

A birdie on the last helped him edge out the in-form Thomas Pieters in Prague and he finished with a birdie again to break out of a large pack and take the lead in the Alps.

Lorenzo-Vera then joined him at the summit with four birdies in his final six holes to sit ahead of the group at five under including defending champion Danny Willett.

Peterson started on the tenth with a birdie but recorded his only blemish of the day on the next before a hat-trick of gains from the 14th. Another birdie followed on the 18th and two more on the seventh and ninth took him clear.

Lorenzo-Vera had a single gain on the front nine at the fifth but caught fire on the way home, making birdies on the tenth, 13th, 14th 15th and 17th in a bogey-free effort.

Willett also had a showstopping finish with an approach to ten feet on the 633 yard ninth to secure an eagle and a share of second after four birdies and a bogey.

Eagles were the order of the day in the eight-strong group in second, with Australian duo Richard Green and Marcus Fraser, and England's James Morrison all recording big birds in their rounds of 65.

Australia's Scott Hend, China's Li Haotong, Denmark's Joachim B Hansen and Frenchman Julien Quesne were also just a single shot off the lead.

Swiss amateur Mathias Eggenberger delighted the home crowd with an eagle on the stunning seventh in his 66, and he was sat alongside Italian Nino Bertasio, Australia's Andrew Dodt, Finn Mikko Ilonen, English duo Anthony Wall and Steve Webster, and South Africa's Richard Sterne.

Miguel Angel Jiménez - the 2010 champion - has 262 birdies on this layout since 1999 and he finished with three to join the group at three under.
