Ahead of this week’s HNA Open de France at Le Golf National, we thought it would be great to catch up with rising French star Romain Langasque, with the 22 year old discussing playing in France, his 2018 Ryder Cup dreams, his best Tour friendships, his beautiful hometown in the south of France and much more…

It feels amazing to be back in France – I have some great memories from last year when the atmosphere was so good and I received great support, and made the cut. So it feels great to be back here with the Open de France now being part of the Rolex Series, and especially with the golf course looking in such great condition. I’m very excited about this week.

I got some great support at the 2016 Masters too actually, especially after my hole-out eagle on the 15th there, but the warmth I feel from the fans here can’t be beaten. This is a unique week for me and I have my family and friends coming to support me as well. As a proud Frenchman this means a lot to me.

France is an amazing country. I’m from the south of France, so in March I can go skiing in the mountains in the morning, then go to the beach in the afternoon, so we’re lucky. I’ve had a lot of help throughout my career from the French Golf Federation as well to help me get to where I am today.

I love being with the other French guys on the European Tour.
I’m especially close with Alex Levy and Victor Dubuisson because we’re all from the same place in France and I have known those guys for about 15 years already. I’m also close with Gregory Havret – he is like my father on tour and we also have the same manager. It’s nice to know that Greg is on tour so I can go to him for advice as well. Raphaël Jacquelin is another good guy and we all just have a great time together. Even when someone plays badly we have dinner and try to laugh together. I’m lucky to have so many friends on tour with me.

Golf is my passion, but sport in general is my passion as well.I love all sports and I play tennis and I like to try every sport. I go biking and motor biking a lot with my father, because this is a real passion of his. I also go and watch Nice play football with my grandfather sometimes.

I’m a normal guy really, so I also like to party and go out with my friends. I also like to have time off to relax and go walking in the mountains. I love being in the mountains, and living in Andorra helps me with that. I ski a lot because of where I’m based, and when I take a week off from golf I like to get away from the golf course to completely relax. It helps me switch off so that when I come back on tour I’m ready to go again and work hard.

My form hasn’t been ideal recently and I’ve missed a lot of cuts,
but on a couple of occasions I was very close to making it back for the weekend, so there’s been a bit of bad luck in there as well. So I took a week off before the BMW International Open, and came back with a new caddie and it feels like a fresh start. I finished tied 31st in Germany last week, and my long game was solid and my putting good, so I’m now just looking forward to the rest of the season and feeling positive.

Sometimes when things aren’t going your way it can be nice to relive some good memories like my 2015 Amateur Championship win, so last week I was watching the semi-final and final of that week on YouTube. That victory will stay with me for the rest of my life and helped me become a good professional. I do think about that week in Scotland quite a lot actually.

After that win there was a lot of hype around me,
but I did all I could to just stay grounded and continue to be the same person. I just want to play my golf, stay humble and stay focused, and I have a great team around me that allow me to do that. My father, my coach and my manager all help with that, and it’s partly why I played on the Challenge Tour last year. I want to take everything step by step and continue learning.

My dream is to play The Ryder Cup here in 2018.
My first dream is to play The Ryder Cup at any time, but it would be special if that were to happen in France. We are lucky and we have that chance, and I’ll do my best. In golf things can happen really quickly, so you never know. I’ll just do my best and even if I’m not playing I’ll make sure I’m there supporting Team Europe. Le Golf National is going to be an amazing venue for the event as well. The course is perfectly suited to it from a fan point of view, and let’s not forget that Paris is an amazing place. I’m expecting big things!

This is the life I dreamt about when I was young and now I get to live it for real, it’s just amazing. After two weeks at home I can’t wait to get back out on the European Tour again, especially at this time of the year when we have some great events in Europe. I always enjoy visiting Sweden, Germany and then to come to France is of course brilliant. Every tournament in the summer is fun and the culture is great too. I love the food in Europe!
On the subject of dreams, my dream fourball would be Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Victor Dubuisson – and me of course. That’s not a bad fourball is it?

I’m from a beautiful, small village in the south-east of France called Cabris. It’s a beautiful place and when I’m back I love going to the square there and visiting my favourite restaurant. When I’m there people come up to me and tell me how proud of me they are, which is great to hear. I try to get home as much as possible because my coach is based in that area of France. So if I have two weeks off, I spend half of that time in Andorra and half of the time in the village I grew up in. It’s a great place and it’s close to places like Cannes, so you can go out in the evening there. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world.

When I’m in Andorra I meet up with Victor (Dubuisson) a lot.
We go out and have dinner together, but it’s also a cool place because you get to meet lots of other sportsmen. There’s lots of Moto GP stars based there, and it’s cool to chat to those guys.

I fell in love with golf from a young age. I can even remember when I made my first par! I was just four and it was at my local club Saint Donat. They have two courses there and it was on the nine hole course, a short par four. I hit my first shot short of the green, then short of the green again with my second shot. My third shot found the green and I made the putt and it was amazing because my grandmother was there watching on another hole!

I hope to make some more pars and birdies this week, but I just want to enjoy the week and not place too much pressure on myself. I’ll take it shot by shot, step by step, and if I can win this tournament, I will do it and take my chance. If that happened it would be great.
