US PGA Champion Martin Kaymer is back on European soil this week and looking to continue his dream season with a victory at the KLM Open.
The German last played the KLM Open in 2008 when he was trying to force his way into Europe’s Ryder Cup Team to face the USA at Valhalla, coming up just short in his bid to force his way into Nick Faldo’s 12-man squad.
Two years on and Kaymer finds himself in an altogether different position in The Netherlands.
The 25 year old may be a Ryder Cup rookie at Celtic Manor in three weeks time, but he is a Ryder Cup rookie with a difference having won his first Major title at Whistling Straights last month and soared to sixth in the Official World Golf Ranking. Not the kind of rookie anyone wants to face in Wales.
As he looked ahead to the KLM Open, Kaymer revealed that he is “ready to win again” after a well deserved break following his Major breakthrough in America.
“It feels good to be back in Europe and great to be here in Holland,” said Kaymer. “I took a three week vacation after the US PGA – I went to New York for a few days and checked out the city and then I came home which was great because I got to spend a lot of time with my family and friends.
“I have been hitting balls over the last week or so now, working with my coach and then was able to drive here from home and it took me just a couple of hours. It’s a great week for me – my family and friends are all coming over for the week so it feels a bit like a home event for me this week.
“I feel good, very well rested and I just hope that the game is still there so that I can contend this week and try to win again because I am ready to win again, that’s for sure.”
