Hugh had a successful career as a club professional at two of Australia's most prestigious clubs, Royal Hobart GC and Brisbane GC, before earning Category 13 European Seniors Tour membership after finishing 32nd at the 2000 Qualifying School in Spain. However, he was limited to five starts during the 2001 season and so could finish no higher than 94th on the Order of Merit, necessitating a trip to the 2001 Tour School where he finished 14th on two under par 282. Hugh won five events on the 2000-2001 Australian Senior Tour. He cites his father and his first coach, Edgar Oakman, as his major influences. His daughter, Olivia, has a handicap of two.
