His victory was a far cry from seven years earlier when he quit the game in 1995 after becoming disillusioned and sold mobile telephones and car stereo systems in Seattle for $7 an hour. Still carries his salesman’s card in his wallet to remind him of where he came from and paid a visit to his old colleagues after his victory at Hazeltine. Watched fellow Texan J P Hayes win the 1998 Buick Classic which regenerated his interest in playing professionally. Worked in the professional’s shop at El Paso Country Club prior to rejoining the Tour in 1999, thanks to finishing tied for eighth in the 1998 Qualifying School in California.
